Winter weather triggered natural gas shortages in China of 2009, which revealed the issue of monopolistic natural gas market. On the other hand, CBM is seen as a practical and reliable substitute energy resource to natural gas. The Chinese government has recently promulgated favorable policies promoting the development of CBM to address the growing natural gas shortage in the country.

According to the draft of New Energy and Industrial Development Planning, China has selected 15 CBM mining areas and five CBM long-distance pipelines for future development. China CBM industry expects to see fast development within the coming years and is expected to produce about 30 billion cubic meters by 2020. Not only in China, other Asia Pacific countries with rich coal resources are carrying out more and more activities in exploring coal bed methane, such as India, Australia, Indonesia and Russia recently.
